Nail Bite Beaver uses built-in functionality on every Mac device called “CoreML”. We first start by taking a picture every second when movement is occurring, or every few seconds if nothing has changed (to save battery). This picture is then fed through a CoreML model that works out what is a hand, and what is a face/mouth, it then works out the distance between them to calculate a confidence score (it uses a combination of the last 3 pictures). Essentially once a picture has been taken, the model is no longer working from the picture, it builds its own virtual hand and mouth with limbs and joints.
Nothing is saved, it all happens really quickly in memory. We keep the last 3 frames in memory to show you if you’ve been caught, but no more than 3 are present at any given time. Thanks to the power of modern Mac devices, nothing is sent over the network, it can all happen locally.
If you’ve got any further questions about the technical details, I’d be more than happy to chat about it, send me an email at support@nailbitebeaver.com.
